ACT Fire & Rescue advises that all homes should be fitted with working smoke alarms. Smoke alarm batteries should be changed at least once a year. A good time to do this is at the end of daylight saving.
It is a good idea to have a home fire escape plan so everybody knows what to do if a fire occurs. Crawl low under smoke where there is fresh air, and check doors for heat before opening them. Everybody should agree on a meeting point outside the front of the house, such as at the letterbox.
