3. Bushfires in the ACT

3.4 What you can do

We can all take steps to ensure we are prepared for bushfire season.

  • Develop an emergency survival plan with your family so that everyone knows what to do if a fire occurs. This template created by the ACT Emergency Services Agency is a great resource to help guide your discussions.
  • During times of bushfire risk, make sure your gutters are clear of leaves, twigs and rubbish, and keep your grass short.
  • Speak with your family about sealing gaps around your windows and doors to protect yourselves from smoke pollution.
  • Ensure your home is fitted with working smoke alarms. Smoke alarm batteries should be changed at least once a year. A good time to do this is at the end of daylight saving.
  • If a fire occurs in your home, crawl low under smoke where there is fresh air, and check doors for heat before opening them. Everybody should agree on a meeting point outside the front of the house, such as at the letterbox.

Visit the Emergency Services Agency website for detailed information about bushfires and advice on what you and your household can do to reduce the risks and impact of fire.
