2.3 What you can do
There are so many ways you can get involved with Canberra’s diverse environmental community. Note that most volunteering opportunities in the ACT will require you to be accompanied by someone over the age of 18.
Volunteer!
- Get your hands dirty by planting, weeding, and restoring habitat in your local area with groups like Landcare, ParkCare or Greening Australia. For a comprehensive list of environmental volunteering groups in the ACT, click here.
- Undertake citizen science monitoring with Waterwatch, Frogwatch or Canberra Birds.
- Care for injured wildlife with ACT Wildlife.
- Contribute to local species knowledge by uploading your wildlife photos to Canberra Nature Map for identification.

Connect!
- Connect with other like-minded people at community events and sustainability workshops. Organisations like SEE-Change and the Canberra Environment Centre are a good place to start.
- Get involved with your local community garden.
- Join the Australian Youth Climate Coalition Canberra to meet other young people who are passionate about climate action.
Advocate!
- Raise awareness at your home and school about environmental issues.
- Join your school’s Green Team. Don’t have one? Start one! The Sustainable Schools Program provides free support to ACT schools to improve sustainability on campus. Visit their website to find out how you can get your school involved today.
- Encourage your friends and family to be more sustainable – for example, by saving water, reducing food waste or using public transport.
- Make your voice heard on local environment, sustainability and climate issues. The YourSay website allows you to share your views on upcoming projects around Canberra.
- Join the ACT Youth Advisory Council.
- Write to your local politicians about issues that matter to you. This guide has some useful tips on how to go about it.
